Fit Notes (previously called Sick Notes) can only be issued by a GP if you have had contact with the GP surgery during that period of illness. Your GP is not the only healthcare professional who can issue fit notes. If you have been in hospital, we would expect the hospital team to issue you with a fit note. Nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and physiotherapists can also issue fit notes.
Doctors are not legally required to issue a medical certificate to cover the first seven days of an illness. Visit gov.uk website for more information https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/statutory-sick-pay-employees-statement-of-sickness-sc2
Please be aware, there is no requirement to issue a fit note for students attending school or college under NHS and Department of Work and Pensions regulations.
To request a Fit Note, please use our econsult system.
